Using the Virtual Adviser

The Virtual Adviser has been designed to serve two purposes:

  • One objective is to help individual Canadians find answers to the questions they have about MONEY and WORK issues. You do not need to "register" to use this site.
  • The second objective is to provide a tool for Facilitators - those teachers, community service workers, and government officials - who are working to assist Canadians with their MONEY and WORK questions and challenges. Facilitators who "Register" will have access to some additional support and resources. There is no cost to register. Just complete the registration form, noting the organization you work with, and we will send you your Username and Password.

To learn more about resources available on this site for an individual user, click on "Individual." To learn more about the benefits offered to Facilitators, click on "Facilitator."

Individual Users
  1. Click on the general topic that interests you: "MONEY" or "WORK."
  2. You will find a list of "Topics," which you can review to see if any relate to a question, or questions, you may have. If so, click on that Topic. If you can't find what you're looking for, click on "Contact Us" and e-mail us your question. We'll try to get the information you need.
  3. At any time, you can access the list of Topics covered in the section you are in. For example, if you are in the "MONEY" section, you will see Theme: MONEY at the top of each page along with a scrollbar that lists all the Money Topics. You can select any Topic that interests you.
  4. When you select a Topic, you will come to a short description and list of related "Questions." Click on any Question that interests you. If you have a question that is not included, click on "Contact Us" and e-mail us your question.
  5. When you click on a Question, you will find five options:
    • "Suggested Answer"
    • "Related Links"
    • "Other Suggested Answers" (more information that others with expertise have submitted to us and that we think are helpful)
    • "Other Questions" (an easy way to link to the other Questions related to that Topic)
    • "Rate this Answer" (an opportunity for you to tell us what you think about the information provided)
You can click on any of these options or just scroll down the screen. At any time, you can click on "Top" to go to the top of the page, "Prev" to go to the previous section, or "Next" to go to the next section.
  6. The back button of your browser will take you to an earlier screen you wish to view again.
  7. Click on "Print Answer" to obtain a hard copy of any information you want to save for future reference.
  8. Many Suggested Answers include links to other sources of relevant information. If you choose to go to any of these links, use the back button of your browser to return to the Virtual Adviser site.
  9. If you have any trouble with the site, click on "Need Help?" to send us an e-mail describing the problem.
  10. We hope you find the Virtual Adviser site useful. If you have any suggestions, we would welcome your feedback. And if you find the help you were looking for, let us know that too.

"General Thoughts and Advice" - This section is designed so that Facilitators using the site, as well as others we invite to contribute, can provide "Advice" on how to help people with this question or challenge. This section will expand over time as more contributions are received and posted.
    2. "Suggested Answer" - You can use our suggested answer to help put your own together. You can also print out the answer and provide it to your client/student. Or you can suggest that your client/student visit the Virtual Adviser on his or her own and get the answer directly from the site.
    3. "Related Links" - This provide access to other sites, organizations, and resources that might be useful to you.
    4. "Other Suggested Answers" - Here we provide more information that others with expertise have submitted to us and that we think are helpful - maybe even ones that you have submitted.
    5. "Other Questions" - These may relate to the interests or needs of your client.
    6. "Suggest an Answer" - If you have suggestions for us regarding the answer to the question, or some additional advice that you think we should share with others, please provide us with your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions in this section.
